Carbonated bath

CO2 causes redness and vasodilation. Vasodilation (which is partly a consequence of the decreased peripheral vascular resistance) may lead to a reduction in arterial blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure is immediately reduced by 8 to 10 mmHg, cardiac output is increased. The carbonated water bath compared to the normal one increases dieresis. Carbon dioxide causes irritation of the skin's warm sensory receptors and as a consequence a temperature of 2-4°C warmer than the same temperature tap water is felt. Carbon dioxide increases partial pressure of oxygen, causes visible redness (even at 300 mg/l of carbon dioxide concentration). Functionally sealed capillaries are opened. Carbon dioxide improves coagulation parameters, reduces hematocrit levels and blood viscosity. Good effect on venous capacity and venous drainage as well. Recent studies have shown that carbonated bath may improve circulation in the brain as well.Carbonated bath is recommended primarily for patients of peripheral arterial vascular disease, and is very useful in cardiac rehabilitation treatments. The latter is often used in Balatonfüred Heart Hospital for therapeutic purposes.
