Ultraviolet therapy

"Light therapy uses ultraviolet, visible and infrared light and the energy of the laser light for treatments.Infrared and ultraviolet irradiations are of relatively small importance when treating locomotor disorders.1. The infrared radiation causes local heat generation. Using traditional Sollux lamps contractured (deformed) muscles can be heated before physical therapy as a pre-treatment (10-15 minutes duration). Contraindicated if perception of heat is abnormal.2. Ultraviolet radiation means that the light's wavelength is between 200-400 nm). There is UV-C irradiation (which mostly only has a bactericidal effect) and there is UV-A and UV-B irradiation. Clinical application area is the treatment of most dermatological disorders (PUVA therapy). It was used on locomotor patients to help creating vitamin D in the past. Today it is used rather as a complementary therapy for treating rheumatoid problems associated with psoriasis (psoriatic artropathia). Some other well-known beneficial biological effects in case of limb arthritis, neuritis and periosteum inflammations (mostly at the vertebrae coccygeae after giving birth) is pain relief. Frequent, repeated irradiation of the skin may lead to reduction of collagen content, and it might lead to the development of skin cancer. There are some drugs that increase sensitivity to light. When taking these, the UV-treatment is not recommended (e.g. Adebit, Gilemal, Sumetrolilm, Sulfaguanidin, INH, prednisolone, Methypred, Celeste, Jectofer, Tauredon, Salazopyrin, Kalmopyrin, Aspirin, Hypothiasid, Uregyt, Brinaldix, furosemide).Treatment Contraindications: acute tuberculosis, fevers, inflammation of the skin or the nerves, heart failure, heart rhythm abnormalities, coronary artery disease, previous X-ray radiation.Solarium is very popular in beauty parlours and among people who like to be tanned. We must be aware, however, that besides aesthetic aspects, it is important to preserve our health. It is a basic rule that using solariums should not be overdone, because it may lead to premature aging of the skin and it irritates the cells within darker moles which might even lead to skin cancer (malignant melanoma)."
